Onward is a San Francisco Bay Area startup that enables seniors and individuals temporarily unable to drive to book assisted, round-trip rides through a mobile platform. Its drivers, who are 1099 contractors paid at least $20 per hour, receive training in CPR and dementia care and must pass background checks and vehicle inspections. Riders pay $35 per hour (one-hour minimum), after which pricing is by the minute, and benefit from door-to-door help, driver wait times, and the option to request favorite drivers. The company currently has more than 25 trained drivers and has completed over 500 trips since its first ride in March. Some drivers can fold wheelchairs, and the fleet is gradually adding vehicles capable of transporting powered wheelchairs. Over the next year, management plans to expand within San Francisco and launch one additional market while scaling to hundreds of drivers and increasing wheelchair-accessible capacity. The seed funding will support these growth initiatives and further develop the platform, though revenue figures have not been disclosed.
