Overview
onX develops mapping and navigation technology delivered through a suite of apps—onX Hunt, onX Offroad and onX Backcountry—used by millions of outdoor recreationists. The company provides access to 852 million acres of public land, 550,000 miles of motorized trails, 10,000 detailed hikes and routes, 60,000 campgrounds and cabins, and hundreds of map layers. Founded in 2009 and based in Missoula, MT, onX has grown both product breadth and engineering capacity to support expansion. Since its Series A in 2018, onX has increased annual recurring revenue 10x and grown its team by more than 300%, including a nearly five-fold increase in its engineering bench. The company has also acquired Outdoor Project and the Adventure Project suite of products to broaden its content and community offerings. It intends to use the new funding to expand operations and further development of its product offerings. onX’s core product is the onX Hunt app, available on desktop, iOS, Android and Garmin devices, which lets users download offline topographic maps and track boundaries of public and private lands. The app supports layered data for hunting, fishing and camping, includes more than 400,000 miles of trails, and the company says it is used by “millions of hunters.” onX’s maps cover nearly one billion acres of public land and roughly 121 million private properties. The company sells state-level access for $30 per year or full U.S. access for $100 annually. Founded in 2009, the 70-person startup has until now never taken major outside funding. With the new capital the company plans to build products outside its core Hunt app and to acquire more customers and data to strengthen its services.
