Open Bionics designs and manufactures the Hero Arm, a 3D-printed, multi-grip bionic hand that is small enough to fit children as young as nine. The company says its price point makes the Hero Arm the only advanced device affordable enough to be covered by national healthcare systems in major western markets including the U.K., France, Germany and the U.S. Open Bionics launched private sales of the Hero Arm in May 2018 and it is now the best-selling multi-grip bionic hand in the U.K., with sales in France and Spain and plans to expand to more European countries. The company previously signed a deal with the U.K. National Health Service to bring new technologies to amputees. Open Bionics was founded in 2014 in Bristol, U.K., and is led by co-founders Samantha Payne and Joel Gibbard. The new funding will support international expansion and continued product development to increase access and adoption. Open Bionics develops low-cost, 3D-printed bionic hands and themed prosthetics for children and adults. The Bristol-based startup, founded in 2014, has produced ranges including Iron Man, Frozen and Star Wars designs and a bionic hand for one-handed gamers. The company says its products target over 2 million hand amputees worldwide who could benefit from lower-cost, high-performing prostheses. Open Bionics has relied on Ultimaker desktop printers for many of its innovations. The firm recently received a $1 million prize from the UAE AI & Robotics Award for Good, which it intends to use to advance medical testing and broader distribution. That award is intended to help the company push its hands through final stages of medical testing and get them to more amputees.
