OpenLabel

San Francisco, CA, United States

Overview

OpenLabel is building a mobile app that lets users scan product barcodes and read or add crowd-sourced notes about products (e.g., labor practices, allergens, recalls, political stances). The platform is described as Twitter-like for product information, with follow functionality and Reddit-style up/down votes to surface useful content. The company does not police content beyond spam and profanity controls; all comments must include a buy/avoid selection. OpenLabel plans an iPhone-first launch with an Android version to follow and is currently in private beta. The founders position the product to eventually attract brands—initially for damage control and later for sponsored messaging. Financially, OpenLabel has closed an initial $80,000 of seed funding and intends to raise a total $300,000 prior to its April launch.
