OpenReel provides a remote camera platform that lets a director control a webcam or mobile device, supports up to four people recording and four people viewing in real time, and stores footage locally for automatic upload. The system can capture up to 4K quality and includes features such as a teleprompter. CEO Lee Firestone and CTO Joe Mathew began the business after building the technology themselves while running a video agency. Demand surged in 2020, with the platform growing from supporting thousands of shoots a year to 10–20x that level, and annual recurring revenue increasing 12x over the past year. OpenReel serves more than 200 enterprise clients (including Dell, HubSpot, ViacomCBS and Verizon Media) and hundreds of small and medium business customers. The company has launched in 125 countries and plans to use new funding to develop product features (including possible livestream support) and continue global growth.
