Overview

OpenSignal provides a platform measuring real-world mobile network experience, delivering insights to consumers and the wireless industry. Its analytics products give telecom operators a granular view of changing network dynamics affecting their own and competitors' networks, helping prioritize network investments. The company analyzes billions of measurements collected from millions of smartphones worldwide to deliver comprehensive end-user insights. OpenSignal works with Tier 1 operators in over 20 countries across six continents. Founded in 2010 and led by CEO Brendan Gill, the London-based company raised an undisclosed funding round from Frog Capital. It intends to use the funds to continue scaling globally and to consolidate its market leadership. OpenSignal operates a platform that taps sensors on smartphones to measure mobile network speed and experience, aggregating data from about 100 million devices and producing roughly a trillion data points. The company sells analytics and benchmarking services used by carriers, regulators, and industry analysts to monitor and compare network performance. OpenSignal started with its own apps and has expanded by integrating with a set of third-party apps to broaden its data sources. The startup says it turned profitable and remained profitable through the last year. It plans to build more analytics on top of its dataset and is hiring to expand its team. OpenSignal is based in London and was founded eight years ago. OpenSignal builds independent, crowdsourced maps of mobile network coverage and performance by encouraging smartphone users to run its signal-checking app. The company has over 9 million app downloads, compiling more than 35 billion data points and mapping over 250 million WiFi hotspots. Its commercial customers include over 20 paying clients across five continents, among them Telefonica, China Mobile and Deloitte. OpenSignal is expanding the types of crowdsourced sensor data it captures—having launched the WeatherSignal meteorology app—and is exploring Bluetooth Low Energy beacons and air-quality sensors. The startup sells insights to carriers, web companies, consultancies, hedge funds and telecoms regulators. It plans to use new funding to grow its team, hiring data-mining experts, data-visualization specialists and data engineers to scale pipelines and analytics. OpenSignal builds independent wireless coverage maps by crowdsourcing signal‑strength data via a background Android app (an iPhone app is said to be on the way). The company has been downloaded over 2 million times and has assembled coverage data for more than 200 countries across 1,000+ networks. It recently closed $1.3 million in seed funding from O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, Passion Capital and Qualcomm Ventures and is hiring new staff. OpenSignal is opening the first version of its API for its NetworkRank product, which can recommend the best network at any location. The company plans additional APIs — a cell tower API and a WiFi access‑point API — that will translate towers and WiFi points to coordinates for use in location services. Use cases cited include property‑search integrations and M2M deployments that need to verify network choice before device rollouts.
