Overview
OpenX offers a SaaS digital revenue platform for media companies, combining ad serving, an ad exchange, a supply-side platform and content valuation via products such as OpenX Enterprise, OpenX Market, OpenX Lift and JumpTime. Its Real-Time Bidding exchange, OpenX Market, processes more than one million bids per second at peak and includes 95 of the nation’s leading advertisers. The company served one trillion ad transactions in 2011 and nearly four trillion in 2012, and posted greater than 100% year-over-year revenue growth in both 2011 and 2012. To support that growth OpenX doubled its team to over 260 employees, expanded to five datacenters on three continents, opened offices in New York, London and Tokyo, and established a 45,000 square foot headquarters in Los Angeles. OpenX plans to use the new funding to accelerate growth, finance additional acquisitions, expand internationally and broaden adoption of its digital revenue platform. OpenX offers a combined ad server and ad exchange, with OpenX Enterprise marketed as a SaaS revenue-serving product for large publishers. OpenX Enterprise unifies exclusive, guaranteed, non-guaranteed and real-time revenue sources to maximize yield across publishers' ad channels in real time. OpenX Market serves as the company's exchange business and has experienced rapid growth, with market revenue up nearly 600% over the past year. The Enterprise platform is used by hundreds of customers, including Groupon, Excite Japan and Business Insider. The company has established international partnerships for its exchange with Dentsu-cci in Japan and Orange‑France Telecom in Europe. OpenX is based in Los Angeles and has raised more than $50 million in total investment to date. OpenX operates an online ad server (Ad Server) and runs OpenX Market, an alternative ad exchange platform. The Pasadena, CA–based company is led by Chairman Jonathan Miller and CEO Tim Cadogan. Management is focused on making OpenX Market a success and continuously adding new publishers to its platform. The Ad Server has attracted over 38,000 publishers representing 150,000 websites, and Market doubled a little over a month after launch to a current monthly run rate of over two billion impressions. OpenX's Hosted product grew more than 500% from December 2008 to April 2009 to a 7.5 billion monthly impressions run rate, with sign-ups exceeding 10,000 in six months. CEO Tim Cadogan said a large part of the prior Series B ($15.5M, closed December 2007) remained in the company's bank accounts, giving it financial flexibility. OpenX is a London-based commercial open-source online ad server firm that recently rebranded from OpenAds to OpenX. The company has previously operated under names including phpAds, phpAdsNew, phpPgAds and Max Media Manager. The firm says the "X" reflects a plan to move with publishers beyond its core open-source ad serving software. OpenX has around $20.5 million in funding from investors including Accel Partners, Index Ventures, First Round Capital, Mangrove Capital Partners and O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures. The rebrand and new logo drew strong criticism on the company blog, with commenters calling the redesign unprofessional and likening it to a "clown-party."
