Overview
OptiMedica develops the Catalys Precision Laser System, a femtosecond laser platform designed to perform every step of laser cataract surgery. Catalys combines a femtosecond laser with integrated 3D OCT imaging, pattern scanning technology, a Liquid Optics™ Interface, and an Integral Guidance™ mapping system to enable precise, safe pulse delivery and an easy-to-use planning interface. The system is U.S. FDA market cleared and CE‑marked and, since its international launch in November 2011 and U.S. launch in February 2012, has been installed in 10 countries and used in more than 6,000 procedures worldwide. Surgeons have reported near‑complete capsulotomies, elimination of ultrasound energy during lens removal, precise corneal incisions, and little to no learning curve. The company intends to use the $35 million growth financing to accelerate global commercialization, support system enhancements, and build a next‑generation product portfolio. Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif., OptiMedica is backed by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Alloy Ventures, DAG Ventures, BlackRock Private Equity Partners and Bio*One Capital. OptiMedica is a Santa Clara, Calif. medical-device maker that develops and sells the Pascal system, a pattern scan laser for eye treatment. Pascal is approved for treating retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and other conditions involving abnormal growth of blood vessels that can leak and obscure vision. The laser performs photocoagulation, burning and fusing tissue at the point of focus to seal blood vessels, heal retinal tears, or reattach detached retinas. The company raised $16 million in its third funding round. Investors in the round included Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Alloy Ventures and DAG Ventures.
