Orcas
28A Mohamed Mazhar Street, Cairo, Al Qahirah, Egypt
Overview
Orcas operates a mobile platform that connects parents and students with tutors and babysitters, aiming to create flexible work opportunities for university students while delivering one-on-one tutoring. The startup was founded in 2014 by Hossam Taher and Amira El Gharib; El Gharib serves as chief growth officer. Orcas currently operates in Cairo, Alexandria, El Gouna and Egypt’s north coast. The company claims over 20,000 app sign-ups. Management says it will use new funding to develop its product offering, scale the company and optimize user experience for stakeholders. Orcas plans to launch a holiday feature called Discoveries to offer activities such as cooking and coding workshops, art, culture and music trips. The product addresses a large local market where over half of Egypt’s 22 million students receive private tutoring annually.
