Overview
Ori develops architectural robotics that transform urban living by creating multi-functional, expandable apartments and living spaces. The company positions its products as more flexible, sustainable and affordable alternatives to conventional apartments. Ori was born out of the MIT Media Lab and is led by CEO Hasier Larrea. The startup recently closed an equity financing round. Investors in the round include Presidio Ventures (a Sumitomo Corporation of Americas group company) alongside existing backers. Ori plans to use the financing to expand in the APAC market. Ori designs robotic interior products and systems that transform space at the touch of a button or via voice command. Its product collection includes the Studio Suite, the Pocket Closet, and the Cloud Bed, slated for commercial availability in 2020. Ori’s solutions are already installed in more than 30 projects across major U.S. cities. The company announced a $20 million Series B to expand its focus beyond products to partnering with architects and builders on flexible, intelligent, sustainable, and affordable urban housing. The funding will support broader strategy and execution as Ori scales deployment of its responsive interior systems. Ori also hired Edwin Hendriksen as president and a board member to lead the expanded strategy. Ori develops programmable, responsive systems that enable interior spaces to transform intelligently and effortlessly. Its first family of systems is designed to improve the functionality and livability of small urban residential spaces and is available exclusively to real estate developers. Ori’s Full and Queen systems provide division of space, a proper living area and increased storage, and are installed in select modern apartment buildings across 10 cities in the United States and Canada. The company combines robotics, architecture and design and says its platforms are interactive, connected and adaptable to everyday life. Ori is exploring additional applications of its systems in hospitality, office and college settings. The company also derives its name from origami, reflecting its focus on folding and adaptable form.
