Oriense

Eindhoven, Noord-Brabant, The Netherlands

Overview

Oriense combines a Primesense (Kinect-like) sensor with proprietary software that scans detected objects and provides voice notifications about obstacles in a user’s path. The founders, with prior work on robot vision, began developing the product last November in St. Petersburg. The current prototype is relatively heavy but works well when paired with a walking stick; users strap the camera to their chest, hold a small computer, and listen via a single-ear earbud. The company plans to sell a first unit using a Primesense camera and a one-pound computer in September. A second, lighter version replacing the Primesense camera with Oriense’s own sensor is slated for availability in about six months. Oriense has raised $20,000 in pre-seed funding to date and plans initial sales in Russia with later expansion to North America.
