Overview

Origami is a technology company on a mission to build a green energy world powered by smart technology. It develops trading and automation software that provides power traders with real-time data and machine-learning decision support to reduce risk, improve visibility and capture opportunities in evolving energy markets. As renewable assets make energy systems more distributed, complex and volatile, Origami's software coordinates networks of renewables, flexible demand, and energy storage to improve efficiency and profitability. The company plans to use its new funding to enhance products, serve a growing customer base and scale up into international markets. The recent £20 million Series C, led by Barclays, was presented as evidence of rising investor appetite for tech that helps reduce global carbon emissions. Origami was advised on the transaction by Silverpeak. Origami Energy develops a software platform that harnesses energy flexibility by managing generation, storage and demand assets to enable greater use of renewables and increase profitability for energy market participants. Over the last 12 months the company has progressed from deploying commercial projects with industrial and commercial customers to signing multi-year partnership agreements with energy suppliers including SmartestEnergy (owned by Marubeni) and Good Energy plc. The company positions its technology as an enabler of new services for suppliers, traders and distributed asset owners. Leadership says the business will use new capital to continue delivery of its growth plans and become a strategic technology partner for large companies. The funding is intended to accelerate Origami Energy’s growth in the UK and to prepare the business for international deployment. The CEO and investors view recent commercial traction and the new investment as validation of the company’s commercialisation progress. Origami Energy develops a technology platform that manages distributed energy assets plugged into the electricity grid, including energy-using, generating and storing devices. The platform controls flows of power to match supply to demand in real time. Its services let customers tap new revenue streams, reduce carbon emissions, increase the marginal capacity of the network and improve security of energy supply. The company plans to use the new funding to move from field trials to large deployments across a wide range of customers, initially focusing on industrial and commercial sites. Origami is based in Cambridge and London and is led by CEO Peter Bance. The company previously raised £4 million in seed funding almost two years ago. Origami Energy develops a SaaS platform that manages the flows of energy and capacity between physical sites with power generation, energy demand and electricity storage. The platform enables renewable energy generators, storage providers and energy users to trade with each other at a micro-grid level and maximize the value of their assets. It creates a real-time marketplace for the distributed energy world. The company intends to use the funds to accelerate growth and build capabilities to bolster its service. Origami raised £3.5m in funding to support that expansion. Lead backers included Octopus Investments and Cambridge Innovation Capital, alongside two angel investors.
