Origin Agritech
No. 21 Sheng Ming Yuan Road, Changping District, Beijing, 102206, China
Overview
Origin Agritech focuses on breeding and commercializing advanced corn seeds for the Chinese market, combining traditional germplasm with modern gene-editing tools. Through a newly signed patent license with Shandong Shunfeng Biotechnology, the company will employ the Cas-SF01 platform and its own Hi-3 one-step editing method to create maize lines with optimized leaf angles for higher-density planting. Origin collaborates closely with China Agricultural University, where researchers have pinpointed the ZmRAVL1 and ZmDWF4 genes that govern leaf architecture, enabling the firm to build what it calls “smart plant architecture.” Recently, Origin received a Beijing municipal license to produce, process, and sell corn seed and re-entered Northeast China with new, nationally approved hybrids such as Jinqiao 8, Jingke 4580, and Jingke 317. The company reported trailing-twelve-month revenue of $12.9 million but saw a year-over-year decline of 21.44%, and its public market capitalization stands at roughly $11.4 million. Management estimates that bio-safety certification for its edited corn lines will take one to two years, after which the products could move toward commercialization. To bolster its balance sheet and fund ongoing R&D, Origin recently secured fresh equity capital from its CEO and institutional investors.
