Overnight operates a mobile marketplace that enables users to submit same-day accommodation requests and connect with local hosts who can accept or decline before exposing a listing to the guest. Users drop a pin, describe their overnight request, and both guests and hosts authenticate via Facebook and mobile phone (with suggested credit card and government ID). Hosts review requests privately and can approve specific guests, after which the guest can browse available hosts and book instantly. The company says it takes a lower commission than Airbnb on the host side. With the new funding Overnight is launching out of beta in Los Angeles, where it already has “hundreds” of hosts, and plans to expand to Austin ahead of SXSW. The seed financing is positioned to support the company’s launch and local expansion efforts.
