Overview

Paizhen Biotech develops and manufactures recombinant adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors, emphasizing rapid, large-scale production of high-purity, high-titer, and high-infectivity AAV for preclinical and clinical use. The company provides AAV custom packaging, lentiviral custom packaging, and vector cloning services. It recently completed a C+ financing round of over RMB 100 million. The financing was granted to support a globalization strategy and to strengthen innovation of its gene therapy services platform. Paizhen intends to use the proceeds to enable gene therapy drug companies by reducing costs and improving efficiency and to accelerate industrialization of gene therapy drugs. The stated goal is to bring safer, more effective, and more affordable gene therapies to patients in China and worldwide. PackGene (派真生物) is a China leading gene therapy CDMO founded in 2014 that concentrates on rAAV production and end-to-end CDMO services. The company offers a one-stop solution from vector design and process development to GMP production and IND support, and its core team has decades of GMP and commercial-production experience. PackGene has served 200+ biotechs and academic customers across 15 countries and recently brought a 1,500 m2 GMP AAV production base into operation. An international 8,000 m2 AAV production base—designed to meet NMPA, FDA, EMA and MHLW standards—is nearing completion and is expected to enter production in the second quarter. PackGene says the new capacity will make it one of the largest AAV producers in China and aims to lower production costs and accelerate access to gene therapies for patients. PackGene is positioned as a genetic drug industrialization platform focused on AAV production and vector R&D. The company’s core team includes a Ph.D. returnee and co‑founder Dr. Huapeng Li, with extensive experience from the Gene Therapy Center at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. PackGene operates a 600 m2 GLP-level AAV production platform and a 500 m2 GMP pilot workshop, and a 4,000 m2 large-scale GMP base was under construction and expected to be operational by the end of 2020. Its self-developed platform reports high-titer AAV production with third‑party-validated quality and infection rates, and it reduced a typical 3–4 month delivery for 1E+15 GC AAV to within 10 working days. PackGene has provided AAV packaging services to more than 100 biomedical companies across nine countries or regions, including Biogen, AstraZeneca, Luye Pharma and EdiGene. The company reports sustained commercial traction with turnover growing two- to six-fold for three consecutive years and has national high-tech enterprise certification (November 2019). PackGene also supported COVID-19 vaccine and therapeutic work, producing AAV vectors for four research institutions including Guangzhou Regenerative Medicine and Health Guangdong Laboratory and the team of Academician Zhong Nanshan.
