Overview
Parallel Systems has developed battery-powered autonomous freight vehicles and systems that attach to and operate existing freight cars and integrate with current train control software. Its technology enables autonomous attach/detach of cars, faster braking, and aims to make rail cost-competitive with trucks for short-distance deliveries. The company positions its vehicles to operate alongside traditional rail operations rather than replace them. Parallel was approved by the Federal Railroad Administration to pilot its system in Georgia along a 160-mile stretch between the Port of Savannah and multiple distribution sites. The company raised a $38 million Series B co-led by Anthos Capital and Collaborative Fund, bringing total funding to more than $100 million. Parallel is focused on commercialization, targeting an initial commercial launch in 2026 and plans to concentrate on the U.S. and Australia. The company emerged from stealth less than a month before securing a nearly $50 million Series A. It was founded by former SpaceX engineers and is based in Los Angeles. Parallel received a $4.4 million ARPA-E research grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to fund advanced testing of its technology. A 29-month testing program will evaluate vehicle stability, contact-based platooning, and energy efficiency with on-track tests in Pueblo, Colorado and analysis support from NREL and the University of Illinois RailTEC. Some rail industry experts remain skeptical about the technology’s prospects and its ability to integrate into existing U.S. rail architecture.
