Overview

Path Central offers a Web-based pathology laboratory information system used by community pathologists. The platform includes accessioning, transcription, consultations, billing, specimen identification and tracking, and interfaces with electronic medical records and doctors’ offices, according to the company’s website. The system is positioned to reduce costs through improved operating efficiencies and to enhance patient safety via its specimen identification and tracking features. Path Central emphasizes creating an interactive industry network by providing multiple services to community pathologists in addition to billing, which the company says differentiates it in a consolidating clinical laboratory and medical billing market. Management includes CEO and co-founder Matthew Watson, COO Dan Angress, and CTO Joseph Nollar, each with prior pathology and laboratory informatics experience. Financially, the company raised $1 million in debt in this financing and has raised more than $13 million since 2010. PathCentral offers a fully integrated, web-based laboratory information system (LIS) and enterprise platform built specifically for community pathology practices. The solution integrates ordering (accessioning), barcode-based laboratory workflow management and specimen tracking, transcription, test send-outs, professional consultations, diagnosis, reporting, billing and financial analysis. The company was created by a team of pathologists and industry executives to streamline all aspects of a pathology practice’s business. PathCentral raised $10M in a Series B financing to support growth initiatives, continue enhancing its web-based LIS, deploy a field sales force and build out a cancer diagnostics laboratory. As part of the fundraise, Sharon Stevenson, DVM PhD (Co-Founder and Managing Director of Okapi Venture Capital), Tim Petersen (Managing Director of Arboretum Ventures) and Michael Liang, PhD (Partner at Baird Venture Partners) joined the company’s board of directors.
