Payload

624 Stocking NW, Grand Rapids, Michigan, 49504, United States

Overview

Payload is a developer-first, open source headless content management system that emphasizes a framework-like approach rather than a no-code builder. Developers define configuration in TypeScript and Payload provisions a MongoDB database, REST and GraphQL APIs, file storage, authentication, access control, and an admin UI with a minimalist default look. The team positions the product as a tool for engineers building critical content infrastructure rather than consumer-facing site builders like Webflow or Squarespace. Payload launched version 1.0 earlier this year and is currently in its first launch week. The company was bootstrapped since 2021 and plans to expand the team, invest in its open source community, and launch a managed service called Payload Cloud to monetize and serve as a deployment hub. Payload is a headless CMS built with TypeScript that provides GraphQL, REST and local APIs, user authentication, an admin panel, and extensibility via hooks to integrate services like Stripe or S3. The product is designed for developers and aims to function more like an application framework than a traditional CMS, saving backend developers time while letting frontends use any technology. Payload has been used in pilots and launches across online games, mobile apps, web apps and websites and was in public beta for about a year prior to its official launch. The company transitioned from a proprietary license to an open-source MIT license to foster trust and reduce adoption friction. That transition created a monetary gap which Payload plans to fill with an enterprise offering that sells plugins (SSO, 2FA, audit logging, metrics) plus technical support and SLAs. Its stated target audience is developers ranging from solo builders to digital agencies and enterprises building mission-critical functionality.
