PennyOwl, based in New York City and Dublin, is building a suite of tools to help parents start money conversations with their children and give kids real-world experience with saving and spending. Its first product is a mobile app that enables children to manage money and develop financial skills while providing parents/guardians with control tools. The company is led by brothers Seamus and Gene Matthews and participated in the Commerce.Innovated accelerator program run by MasterCard and Silicon Valley Bank. PennyOwl completed a $1.3m seed funding round to support growth. The company intends to use the funds to hire new people and expects to create 30 jobs over the next three years. Management says the capital will be used to grow its customer offering in the U.S. and other international markets.
