Overview

Pentaho is an open-source business intelligence and data integration vendor that offers a BI platform and an open-sourced data integration platform, Kettle. The company added native support for a wide range of data sources, including major Apache Hadoop distributions, NoSQL databases such as MongoDB and HBase, columnar databases like Greenplum and Netezza, and relational databases such as Oracle and PostgreSQL. Pentaho competes with other open-source BI vendors like Jaspersoft as well as proprietary solutions from companies such as SAP. The company was founded in 2004. Pentaho has raised a total of $55 million to date, reflecting continued investor support for its product development and open-source strategy. Pentaho builds open source business intelligence software for data analysis and reporting. The company announced a $12 million third round of funding amid significant consolidation in the $6.25 billion BI industry, as Oracle, SAP and IBM have made large acquisitions. Benchmark Capital led the round, and existing investors Index Ventures and New Enterprise Associates also participated. The four-year-old company reports three million lifetime downloads and more than 20,000 registered community members. Customers named in the article include Cox Communications, Monsanto Corporation, Savvion, Sun Microsystems and the U.S. Naval Air Command. Benchmark’s partner Peter Fenton has a track record of backing open source companies, and Benchmark previously invested in Red Hat, Zimbra and MySQL.
