PetaGene

3 Charles Babbage Road, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, CB3 0GT, United Kingdom

Overview

PetaGene builds software to compress and manage large-scale genomics data, aiming to make whole-genome sequencing files up to ten times smaller and faster to transfer. The company says its compressors can outperform existing state-of-the-art methods by as much as 6x while preserving original files bit-for-bit and offering commercial guarantees. Target customers include pharmaceutical companies, academic research institutions, clinical labs and genomic sequencing companies. Its commercial model charges clients based on the storage and transfer savings they achieve and does not charge for accessing or decompressing compressed data. PetaGene plans to use new funding to grow its technical team in Cambridge, expand its global sales organization, and broaden its product offerings; the round follows signing a large contract with a major undisclosed pharmaceutical company. The company is an alumnus of EF6 and was founded by Dan Greenfield and Vaughan Wittorff, both PhD holders from Cambridge University.
