PharmAkea Therapeutics is a San Diego-based developer of a drug discovery platform to generate and advance novel small-molecule therapies targeting cancer and fibrotic diseases. Founded in 2012 by John Hutchinson, Ph.D., Jilly Evans, Ph.D., and Kevin Holme, Ph.D., the company launched with seed funding from Celgene. PharmAkea focuses on discovering and developing small-molecule therapeutics directed at oncology and fibrotic indications and intends to leverage its proprietary platform through strategic partnerships. The company completed a $10M Series A from Bay City Capital and entered a strategic collaboration with Celgene, which will take an equity stake and retain an exclusive option to acquire PharmAkea. Under the collaboration Celgene will commit $35M during an initial three-year alliance term, with an option to extend the collaboration with additional funding. Robert F. Williamson, III will join the company as CEO.
