Overview
Philips builds the Lumify AI-guided handheld ultrasound, designed so midwives and non-expert users can perform maternal scans after only a few hours of training. The system’s AI guidance reduces the need for an expert sonographer, improving access to prenatal imaging where trained technicians are scarce. Philips reports positive outcomes from deployments in Kenya, where midwives are effectively using the devices. The company received an additional $44.6 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support global adoption of the AI capability and the Lumify platform. That brings total Gates Foundation funding to $60 million, following a $15.4 million investment in 2021. Philips and the Gates Foundation say the funding will help improve maternal health and bring health technology to underserved areas worldwide.
