Phlux Technology
Block 5, Level 2, Pennine Five Campus, 18 Hawley Street, Sheffield, S1 4WP, United Kingdom
Overview
Phlux Technology designs, manufactures and markets 1550 nm infrared (IR) sensors, including its Noiseless InGaAs® Avalanche Photodiodes (APD), which the company says detect signals at up to 50% greater distance for range finders, LiDAR systems and optical fibre test equipment. Its sensors are offered as bare die or in industry-standard surface-mount or wire-ended packages that can be retrofitted to existing systems. The company is based in Sheffield and was founded in 2020 as a spin-out from the University of Sheffield by Ben White (CEO), Jo Shien Ng and Chee Hing Tan. Phlux’s technology is antimonide-based semiconductor technology, and the firm intends to use the new funding to drive expansion into the optical communications and sensing markets. Financially, Phlux raised a £9M funding round in March 2025 led by BGF, and previously raised a £4M seed round led by Octopus Ventures in December 2022. The company’s current plans focus on commercialising its APD sensors and expanding market reach in sensing and optical communications. Phlux Technology designs infrared sensors and a LIDAR receiver chip using antimonide materials. The company is building integrated subsystems and array modules to offer a high-performance sensor toolkit. Its sensors target applications beyond LIDAR, including satellite communications, enabling internet in remote regions, fibre telecoms, autonomous vehicles, gas sensing and quantum communications. Phlux is a spin-out of the University of Sheffield and is based in Sheffield, a leading centre for III‑V semiconductor research with access to the National Epitaxy Facility. The company was founded by Ben White (CEO), Professor Jo Shien Ng and Professor Chee Hing Tan. It intends to use the funds to accelerate growth and expand operations.
