Phytoponics develops a patented Hydrosac deep-water hydroponic system that uses substantially more water (about 10 liters per tomato plant) to provide a wider buffer of nutrients, temperature and dissolved oxygen for more predictable, programmable production. The system is positioned for large vine crops — tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers — rather than salad crops, and the company says Hydrosac is ready for high-volume commercial output after pilot trials. Phytoponics proved the technology by producing high-quality tomatoes in a pilot with Aberystwyth University and plans a farm-scale trial with a major commercial grower to supply two UK supermarket chains in early 2019. The company was co-founded in October 2016 by Adam Dixon and Luke Parkin and is Aberystwyth-based. To date Phytoponics has focused on development and trials and has raised seed funding to commercialize the technology; it plans to hire additional technical and commercial staff and scale internationally via partnerships.
