Piavita

Overview
Piavita builds a palm-sized wireless monitoring device paired with a web-based app that allows veterinarians to track horses' vital signs through the animal's coat without shaving or sedation. The device plugs into a mounting unit wrapped around the horse and transmits high-precision measurements to the Piavita SaaS platform. Piavita sells a Vet System package for about $7,000 that includes installation, two monitoring devices, and the first year of software subscription. The company has installed more than 200 systems in over 80 clinics and practices across Germany and Switzerland and expects to have 2,000 systems installed by year-end across Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, France, and the U.K. Piavita plans to scale production, expand to new markets, broaden its client base beyond veterinarians into breeding and sports industries, and open an office in Berlin in the coming months. The team currently totals 20 employees and says U.S. market entry will come later with low regulatory barriers for animal-use devices. Piavita is a Zurich-based startup developing a compact, card-sized device that measures veterinary vital signs through an animal’s fur and skin. The device is designed to record multiple vital parameters simultaneously (ECG, pulse, respiration, temperature, movement) on a medically significant level without stressing the animal. Initially the product targets companion animals (cats and dogs), enabling measurements in waiting rooms or during walks and supporting deep and long-term analyses for chronic conditions. In parallel, Piavita is pursuing the equine market with continuous monitoring to provide early warnings for colic, training analytics, health surveillance and remote diagnostics. The company secured funding to finalize development toward industrialization, acquire pre-orders for a planned 2017 market entry and to pursue a mid-term business model based on the collected big data. Piavita is CTI-supported and led by founders Dorina Thiess (CEO) and Sascha Bührle (CTO); the team has also added board members and veterinary collaborators to support commercialization.
