Pinscreen

Overview

Pinscreen builds neural-network software that generates photorealistic three-dimensional images from a single scan or snapshot. Currently the technology is used to create exaggerated facial caricatures and election-related GIFs, though the same approach can produce highly realistic video and lifelike 3D models. The company positions its tools as bringing studio-grade graphics capabilities previously available only at places like Industrial Light & Magic or Weta to mainstream users. Pinscreen says it is building a platform for people to create visual content and the founder expects the technology will reach fully photorealistic outputs within a year or two. The team emerged from roughly a year in stealth and includes USC researchers and industry veterans such as Hao Li, Frances Chen, and Stanley Kim. Financially, Pinscreen has raised $1.8 million in a seed round backed by Lux Capital and a few other undisclosed venture firms.
