Overview

Pix4D develops advanced image-processing algorithms that analyze and combine aerial images to produce three-dimensional models. Its Pix4UAV software automatically converts thousands of standard drone pictures into professional geo-referenced images and 4D timelines. The company’s proprietary solutions are fully automatic, faster, cost-effective, and often more accurate than existing 3D mapping technologies, enabling survey accuracy down to about 5 centimeters. Customers include UAV manufacturers for bundling as well as farming, mining, construction, exploration companies, professional surveyors, and clients such as the United Nations and global mining companies. The Parrot Group has agreed to invest CHF 2.4 million to accelerate development of Pix4D’s mapping and GIS software and to support collaboration with Parrot’s AR.Drone to access the consumer AR and 4D gaming market. Founded in 2011 as a spin-off of EPFL in Switzerland, Pix4D is described as a leading provider for professional UAV processing software and is rapidly expanding. Pix4D, an EPFL spin-off founded by Christoph Strecha and Olivier Küng, develops Pix4UAV, software that stitches thousands of aerial images into high-precision 2D maps and 3D models. The product is offered as both a desktop and cloud-based service and emphasizes user friendliness and fast delivery of results. Target applications include mining, civil engineering, precision farming and urban modeling. Several pilot projects have been initiated and the UN has used the software in Haiti, demonstrating broader applicability. The company reports early commercial traction with talks with potential investors and a near-term prospective customer in senseFly. Pix4D says the Venture Kick prize money will be used to acquire new customers and support growth.
