Overview
Pixate provides a platform and SDK that allows mobile developers and designers to style native applications using CSS atop a vector-scalable graphics engine. Pixate 1.0 for iOS launched to the public in January and integrates into existing apps via an SDK. The company plans to expand its engineering and support teams to build Android and Mac versions of the platform, improve developer resources and increase support quality. Pixate will release the full Pixate Engine for free and has launched Pixate Labs to publish beta versions, prototypes and experiments. Financially, Pixate has completed seed funding from Y Combinator/YC VC and a Kickstarter campaign, and has now closed a Series A to fund these product and team initiatives. Pixate provides a framework that lets designers and developers style native mobile applications using standard CSS and a vector-scalable graphics engine. The product includes a CSS engine (W3C-compliant and largely identical to web CSS) and an SDK to integrate into existing apps. Pixate initially supports iOS (including Xcode, RubyMotion, MonoTouch, and Appcelerator Titanium) and plans to port the technology to Android to address varied screen sizes and cross-platform consistency. The approach reduces the number of images and amount of code required in apps and aims to make mobile design more accessible to web designers. The team of four is led by co-founder Paul Colton with co-founder Kevin Lindsey and includes a graphic designer and product manager. Pixate is Palo Alto–based and is commercially available with tiered pricing starting at $199 for an indie license and up to $1,299 for enterprise with priority support.
