Pixeom

Santa Clara, CA, 95050, US

Overview

Pixeom provides a software-defined edge computing platform for enterprises that can run on commodity hardware and uses containers to ship and manage software at the edge. The platform is API-compatible with Google Cloud Platform, AWS and Azure and implements a subset of those providers' core storage, compute and machine-learning services. Pixeom emphasizes affordability and reusing existing hardware versus vendor-locked appliances. The company pivoted from a Raspberry Pi-based personal cloud device first launched in 2014 to an enterprise focus after early conversations with Samsung and difficulty finding VC funding. More than a dozen Fortune 500 companies use Pixeom, and the software manages over one million devices worldwide. The company reports revenues in the double-digit millions and has grown to more than 90 employees; it plans to use new funding to expand go-to-market capacity and invest in product development. Pixeom is developing a Raspberry Pi–powered personal encrypted cloud device that plugs into a home Ethernet connection and provides expandable local storage (16GB internal plus two USB ports, and support for chaining multiple devices). The platform ships with three apps at launch—File Exchange, Club Exchange and Market Exchange—to replace services like Dropbox, Google Drive, Facebook and Amazon Marketplace, and offers optional participation in a global Pixeom Exchange Network for public content. The company is selling hardware with no subscription fees today and may later monetize the Exchange Network (for example via promoted listings). Financially, Pixeom passed a $50,000 Kickstarter target with close to 400 backers and has secured more than $500,000 in private funding to reach market. Founders Karishma and Sam Nagar aim to ship to backers in May and project selling 400,000–500,000 units in the first year while lining up channel partners and additional hardware designs. The team is also planning to expand apps to include cloud games and conferencing/telepresence features to increase regular user engagement.
