PlacePop provides a self-serve iPhone app enabling businesses to launch custom-branded virtual rewards cards and loyalty programs in about five minutes. The platform includes social features such as photo sharing and check-ins to provide utility even when venues haven’t joined. PlacePop lets users earn rewards points toward venues before businesses enroll, allowing venues to later “claim” profiles that already show traction. Venues can fully customize branding and design bespoke reward mechanics, including Groupon-style group-activated deals. The company is positioning itself against location-based services like Foursquare and competitors such as We Reward, and is addressing the chicken-and-egg challenge of attracting both users and merchants. CEO Kent Lindstrom unveiled the product while announcing the company’s recent funding.
