Overview

Planet3 is a Washington, D.C.-based exploration-based learning company offering a personalized digital learning platform that uses the planet Earth as a laboratory to teach Earth, Life, and Physical Science. The platform leverages narratives, real-world data, and visualization to engage and inspire students and future scientists, engineers, artists, and technologists. Planet3 launched an initial pilot focused on middle school Earth and Life Sciences and plans to target a minimum of 25 pilot schools across six Nevada districts, including Clark County. The platform is scheduled for a formal launch in Fall 2017, and long-term plans include expanding into K–12 curriculum across all STEAM subjects. Co-founded and led by Tim Kelly, former President of the National Geographic Society and media pioneer, and Tim Kelly, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, the company is advancing an Early Adopter program. Planet3 has raised a total of $13M and will use the additional $3M investment to further develop its digital learning platform and expand the Early Adopter program. Planet3 has developed a digital learning platform that combines game-based environments, real-world context, and standards-based curriculum to present the entire Earth as a living laboratory. The platform targets Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) subjects. Its first product focuses on middle school Earth, Life, and Physical Sciences with an initial release scheduled for Fall 2016. The company plans to use proceeds from its Series A to launch the digital learning platform. The founding team includes CEO Tim Kelly, Chief Science Officer Dr. Albert Yu-Min Lin, and Chief Creative Officer Vijay Lakshman; the team also lists Chief Learning Officer Kelly McGrath and Chief Technology Officer Royal O’Brien. Planet3 is based in Washington, DC.
