PlanGrid offers cloud-based construction software that lets contractors, architects and owners collaborate on plans, specs, photos, RFIs and punchlists from desktop and mobile devices. The platform enables instant sharing of plans and markups across project teams and has a mobility partnership with Apple to extend field capabilities. Led by co-founder and CEO Tracy Young, PlanGrid claims usage on more than 300,000 projects and stores over 30 million construction documents. The company emerged from Y Combinator in 2012 and is headquartered in San Francisco. PlanGrid will use the newly raised funds to invest in research and development to enhance its product and mobile offerings. PlanGrid is a mobile construction-management application that digitizes blueprints and functions like a Google Docs for plans, letting project teams view and collaborate on drawings. The app was built with the iPad in mind and now runs on both iOS and Android, with offline collaboration for jobsites with limited connectivity. Customers use PlanGrid to share plans, markups, photos and reports with entire project teams. The company reports 650,000 users, both free and paid, and has grown to about 150 employees. PlanGrid positions paper as its primary competitor and says there is substantial room to grow across the U.S. and internationally. Its roadmap calls for expanding the app to cover broader construction workflows, including team collaboration, planning and project management. PlanGrid offers an iPad app and cloud service that replaces printed construction blueprints with an easy-to-update, shareable digital workflow. The product includes features such as pinning photos to blueprints, attaching PDFs to individual sheets, retina support, shared markups across devices, automatic camera uploads to the cloud, and a web-based PDF renderer. Since launching its first app in March, the company says it is being used on over 2,900 construction projects worldwide and has paying users across many U.S. states as well as in Australia, Mexico and Canada. The team has rolled out multiple feature updates and a redesigned UI, and a new version of the app with more enhancements is with Apple. PlanGrid plans to use the new funding to expand its team and add more features to make the product stickier for in-field users. Ryan Sutton-Gee is a co-founder and CEO, and the company was a participant in Y Combinator’s March 2012 class.
