Playdom is a social gaming company focused on expanding its presence on Facebook and in the broader social gaming space. The company has been aggressively acquiring studios and talent, including Hive7, Acclaim Games, Offbeat Creations, Three Melons, and Merscom, and it invested $5 million in MetroGames. Playdom recently raised $33 million from Disney’s Steamboat Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners and New World Ventures and had earlier raised $43 million in November at a $260 million valuation. The company reports 28 million monthly game users, with traffic roughly 60% from MySpace and 40% from Facebook. Playdom has also brought on a new CTO as it competes with gaming companies like Zynga and continues to integrate acquired teams into its Mountain View offices. Playdom develops social games primarily for MySpace and Facebook, with a flagship title Mob Wars. The company reports about 28 million monthly game users, roughly 14 million of whom play Mob Wars on MySpace. Sixty percent of traffic comes from MySpace and 40% from Facebook; Playdom runs 12 MySpace apps and six Facebook apps. Playdom estimates it is pulling in $60 million or more in revenue, with 70% from direct payments, 10% from advertising and 20% from offers. The company says it bans spammy offer types like mobile subscriptions. Playdom has been accused by competitor Zynga of stealing employees and intellectual property, and it competes closely with Zynga and Playfish.
