PlayFab will use new funding to accelerate growth, invest in new technology, expand its backend engineering team, and integrate with additional industry partners. The company is based in Seattle, WA. PlayFab is a backend-as-a-service platform designed to handle the server and operations side of games across mobile, PC, and consoles. Its Game Manager includes analytics and operations tools to manage game servers, purchases through Steam and other stores, player inventories, character stats, push notifications, and build deployment. The platform is built to support popular engines such as Unity, Unreal, and Cocos2D, making it easier for studios without large operations teams to adopt. PlayFab is partnering with Exit Games to offer Photon Server software to customers at no additional cost so teams can spin up Photon servers quickly. The current UI is described as cluttered and the company plans to roll out a cleaner, more responsive interface for PC and mobile in the coming weeks. The product was developed for three years under the name Uber Entertainment and is led by James Gwertzman, a former PopCop VP.
