Playkids began as a video/TV app and has expanded into a broader children’s entertainment platform that includes books, puzzles, games and audio. The service uses a freemium model: basic features are free while premium content is subscription-based. Playkids reports over one billion episodes played across six languages and offers premium content on iOS and Android in 27 countries. It has been particularly successful in China and the U.S., ranking highly per App Annie and appearing as the overall top-grossing children’s app worldwide. The product also includes parent-focused features such as watch-time limits, a parental dashboard and a messaging feature called Rocket (initially on Apple Watch) that the company plans to expand to iOS. Playkids recently launched in China and Japan and says it will now focus on developing technology and services in existing markets; Movile has also indicated Playkids could be spun out as an independent business.
