Overview
Playlab is best known for its Juice Cube casual series and focuses on the rapidly growing Southeast Asian mobile-games market. The three-year-old company is Hong Kong-registered with its main office in Bangkok and outposts in Manila and Singapore. Juice Cube has attracted over 6 million monthly players, about 1.5 million daily players, and has generated more than $12 million in revenue to date; Rovio co-developed a version under its Rovio Stars arm. Playlab plans to redevelop the Juice Cube series, increase its headcount from about 100, open as a publishing platform for smaller Southeast Asian studios, and ramp output to six new games per year (half developed internally). The company intends to secure IP for future titles, fund user-acquisition campaigns, build a new casual-games studio, and pursue localization and partnership opportunities. Playlab is currently investing in regional expansion; it was not profitable at the time of the article but expected to realize (or return to) profitability within two years, with an update noting it posted a few million dollars in profit last year while now reinvesting for growth.
