Playmatics

30 John Street, Brooklyn, New York, 11201, United States

Overview

Playmatics develops reality-based, social and mobile games, currently building a "real world" franchise called Shadow Government. The game will initially launch on the Facebook platform and uses economic and sustainability data plus government-modeling software from the Millennium Institute (creator of Threshold 21) to simulate building and running virtual countries. Playmatics positions Shadow Government as an entertainment-first experience that can also be educational and incorporated into curricula from primary schools through universities. The studio plans to incorporate real-world news and data, sometimes in real time, and to use aggregate player behavior as a means of crowdsourcing ideas about systemic issues. Playmatics was co-founded by Margaret Wallace, Nick Fortugno and Phillipe Trawinka; Wallace is the company CEO and a spin-out for Shadow Government is mentioned. The company has designed social and mobile games for clients including AMC’s Breaking Bad and the New York Public Library (with Jane McGonigal) and currently employs 15 full-time staff.
