Plendi provides a mobile receipt-management service where users photograph receipts and human data-entry staff transcribe and store the information in a personal online receipt manager. The service retains both the receipt image and structured fields—vendor, date, currency, net, VAT and total—permanently. Available for iPhone and Android, Plendi deliberately shuns OCR and uses human labor for greater flexibility, described in the article as a kind of Mechanical Turk for receipt transcription. The product is subscription-based, costing from €39.95 per year. In four months since launch the company expanded to 20 countries; the new investment is intended to further develop Plendi’s technology and to more widely market the service. Plendi is led by CEO Fergal Murray, plans a BlackBerry app release in April 2011, and competes with services such as Expensify and Expensecloud.
