PlusN, based in Elmsford, N.Y., develops a software-based digital multi-band downlink carrier aggregation solution called the Smart Carrier Aggregator. The patented Smart Carrier Aggregator combines 2 to 5 carriers in the basestation downlink digital front end to provide lossless intra-band and inter-band aggregation and improved spectral efficiency. It is designed for deployment in LTE and LTE-A basestations — including macro, small and pico cells — and is compatible with current and planned future LTE-based and older mobile receivers without requiring aggregation-specific software or chips in handsets. Because aggregation is performed at the basestation and the solution is software-based, PlusN says no extra infrastructure or power resources are required, reducing insertion cost and accelerating deployment. The company plans to release a Smart Carrier Aggregator product evaluation kit to mobile operators and OEMs later this year. PlusN raised $600,000 to advance its commercialization efforts.
