Overview
Popdeem is a Dublin social network startup that white-labels technology to enable brands to drive word-of-mouth and peer-to-peer engagement across social networks. Its core product is social marketing tools sold to brands to engage customers online. The company emerged from the Wayra incubator and was founded in 2012, and has attracted funding from Enterprise Ireland, Wayra, the National Digital Research Centre and a reported investment from Delta Partners. Enterprise Ireland topped up its commitment with a €200,000 investment on top of a prior €245,000 from the agency; Wayra invested €55,000, NDRC €20,000, and founder equity includes €5,000 from Cecil Hayes. The operating company, Somnium Ltd, disclosed €350,000 owed to a long-term creditor and debtors of €8,814 at 31 August 2015. Somnium booked a €257,000 loss in 2014/15, bringing accumulated losses to €431,000, and cash resources fell from €438,000 to €184,000, leaving a deficit in shareholders' funds of €156,000. Securing customers would appear to be a slow burn. Popdeem is a Dublin-based social marketing startup founded in 2012 and led by CEO Richard Whelan. The company is developing an influencer marketing platform and a mobile SDK that enables brands to drive peer-to-peer engagement across social networks. Brands can integrate the SDK into existing mobile apps so customers can check in or share photos on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to redeem rewards. Popdeem rewards users for sharing experiences at specific brand locations or at events. The company intends to use the funds to further accelerate its commercial development. Popdeem was one of the first start-ups to accelerate its business in Wayra in 2012/2013.
