Pragma
Tel Aviv, Israel
Overview
Pragma offers a backend-as-a-service platform that supplies ready-made infrastructure for online, live-service game developers. Its features are organized into three areas: player accounts/social, game loops (including lobbies and matchmaking), and player/game data, and it can act as an integrator for platforms like Discord. The current product is delivered on-premise as an instance on a studio’s own infrastructure to allow customization, with plans to offer a fully managed solution in the future. Pragma launched a starter kit to let developers quickly set up and test game loops, and its broader platform is in private beta with studios including One More Game and Nate Mitchell’s Mountain Top Studios. The company initially targets studios of roughly 10–50 team members while aiming to support larger studios and democratize tools for 1–5 person teams. Co-founders include CEO Eden Chen and Chris Cobb, a former engineering lead at Riot Games. Pragma raised $12 million in a Series A to advance its platform and go-to-market efforts. Pragma offers a backend-as-a-service toolkit for gaming companies that includes accounts, player data, lobbies, matchmaking, social systems, telemetry and store fulfillment. The company was founded by CEO Eden Chen and former Riot Games engineering lead Chris Cobb and positions itself as a complement to front-end engines like Epic. Pragma argues off-the-shelf back-end tooling can dramatically reduce time-to-launch for multiplayer games, which can otherwise remain in beta for years. The company raised $4.2 million in funding led by Upfront Ventures. Pragma currently has one customer and plans to launch to an exclusive set of beta users in late 2020. Investors named in the article include Advancit Capital and angel participants Jarl Mohn, Dan Dinh and William Hockey.
