Overview
Prebeo is developing the Kidney Viability Assessment System (KVAS), a device that uses optical coherence tomography (OCT) augmented by an intelligent image-analysis algorithm to non-invasively evaluate donor kidneys in real time. The KVAS scan time is under five minutes and is designed to serve as a quantitative supplement to the current standard of care, which relies on a single tissue biopsy and a donor-history score. Prebeo says the technology aims to reduce the thousands of donor kidneys discarded each year by providing an objective viability assessment and thereby increase successful transplantations. The company estimates a market need of roughly $458 million annually, targeting Certified Transplant Centers, Organ Procurement Organizations and hospitals across the U.S. The technology was invented by Yu Chen, PhD, formerly an Associate Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. Prebeo is based in Baltimore, MD, and is a portfolio company of Early Charm Ventures. The company recently received support to advance development through TEDCO’s Maryland Innovation Initiative.
