Overview

PROCEPT BioRobotics is a privately-held surgical robotics company based in Silicon Valley that develops the AQUABEAM System and Aquablation therapy for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The AQUABEAM System is the first FDA-granted surgical robot providing autonomous tissue removal, combining real-time, multi-dimensional prostate imaging and surgical robotics to deliver waterjet (Aquablation) ablation. Aquablation therapy is a minimally invasive, heat-free technique that enables targeted, controlled and immediate removal of prostate tissue with consistent, predictable and reproducible outcomes and a low risk of sexual side effects. The company states Aquablation outcomes are independent of prostate anatomy, prostate size or surgeon experience. The system is commercially available in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and select European markets. The recent $118 million financing will support worldwide commercialization of Aquablation therapy. PROCEPT BioRobotics develops the AquaBeam System, which combines image guidance and robotics to deliver Aquablation, a minimally invasive waterjet ablation therapy for targeted, controlled, and heat-free tissue removal. The therapy is intended to treat lower urinary tract symptoms by enabling precise prostate tissue resection. The company is led by founder and CEO Nikolai Aljuri, Ph.D. PROCEPT has received conditional FDA approval to run an investigational device exemption trial in the United States to evaluate Aquablation’s safety and effectiveness. The company plans a limited commercial launch of AquaBeam in targeted international markets. It also intends to conduct the WATER study, a randomized blinded controlled clinical trial of its waterjet ablation therapy. The recent financing supports these clinical and commercial plans.
