Pulse Labs builds testing and user-research tools to help voice applications (Alexa, Google Assistant and similar) better understand and respond to real human speech. Its core product crowdsources interactions via third-party partners and market-research firms to provide demographic-specific testing and feedback for voice app developers. The company’s short-term focus is enabling developers to recognize demographic nuances and build more personalized experiences across age groups and locales. Its longer-term goal is to develop models that allow services to subtly adapt responses over time based on how questions are asked. Pulse has been working with Alexa developers and plans to expand testing to other assistants, including Google’s. The company raised $2.5 million in seed funding to support these efforts; it was founded last year and is based in Seattle.
