Puzzazz

Redmond, WA, United States

Overview

Puzzazz began as a creator of online, mobile, and e-book puzzles and has developed TouchWrite, a handwriting-recognition input method for touch-screen devices. The company used roughly $400,000 in funding received last year to analyze handwriting samples and build the TouchWrite system. TouchWrite is currently available on touchable Kindles in the Sudoku e-book "Sudoku Unbound Volume 3." Founder Roy Leban declined to comment about expanding the technology within the Kindle Touch ecosystem or to other devices such as Nook or Kobo. The technology is hampered by the passive screen's slow refresh—users can’t see what they are writing—which limits some applications. Puzzazz faces competitive risk from imitators and the possibility that device makers could develop similar input methods internally, while the shortening half-life of e-readers may also affect long-term prospects.
