Founded in 2018, San Diego-based Qpex Biopharma is building a pipeline of best-in-class agents aimed at combating antimicrobial-resistant pathogens flagged as serious or urgent threats by the CDC and WHO. Its lead program centers on QPX7728, an ultra-broad-spectrum beta-lactamase inhibitor that forms the backbone of two products: OMNIvance, an IV formulation now in Phase 1 trials, and ORAvance, an oral combination intended for outpatient use. A third candidate, QPX9003, is a next-generation IV polymyxin engineered to treat highly drug-resistant Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter infections. The company plans to advance all three programs through clinical studies during 2021, supported by a public-private partnership with BARDA. To date, BARDA has committed $67 million in non-dilutive funding, with the potential to reach $132 million if all options are exercised. Qpex also maintains a multi-product development and commercialization collaboration with Brii Biosciences in greater China and counts NEA, Adams Street Partners, LYZZ Capital, Hatteras Venture Partners, and Stanford University Daper Fund among its equity backers.
