Overview

Quantopian is a Boston-based online platform that provides a community environment for creating, testing, and licensing institutional-quality investment algorithms. It offers free access to US equity pricing and corporate fundamental data, research capabilities, a backtester, university-level education tools, and a growing catalog of premium datasets. The company’s community has more than 100,000 members across 180 countries and has run over 4.5 million simulations; members include finance professionals, scientists, developers, and students. In September 2015 Quantopian began allocating proprietary capital to selected member algorithms and expects to begin allocating external capital in 2017. Authors of selected algorithms are paid a share of net profits under licensing agreements. Quantopian provides a free, institutional‑quality online platform and data that enables a community of quantitative developers to create and test investment algorithms. The company supplies data, infrastructure, and a licensing pathway whereby selected algorithms are allocated capital and authors are paid royalties tied to performance. Quantopian's community has grown to over 85,000 members from 180 countries and has produced more than 400,000 algorithms and over 3.5 million simulations. In September 2015 Quantopian began allocating proprietary capital to selected community algorithms, and the company evaluates strategies on return, risk, style, capacity, and interaction effects.
