Queer Spaces

Los Angeles, CA, United States

Overview

Queer Spaces is building Spaces, a group chat platform for queer communities that lets users connect around favorite topics, plan meetups, and hang out. The company said it will use the new funding to release a preliminary Android version in December and to ship Version 2.0 of Spaces, which will offer a more streamlined way of matching users with its lineup of new spaces, chat topics, and users. The platform grew to more than 25,000 users and 2,500 spaces in December. Example spaces include Gaymers, Trans Space, Tarot & Relationships, Black LGBTQ+, Queer Art, Transgender Motorcycle Riders, and AuDHD babes. Financial details of the recent funding were undisclosed; the investment was made by Social Discovery Group alongside over 100 backers. Queer Spaces is based in Los Angeles, California. Queer Spaces is a social media app launched in March 2022 by parent company Hornet Networks as an extension of its queer-focused tech platform. The app prioritizes LGBTQ+ safety and enables users to create and join interest-based groups with discoverability tools and near-instant community creation. In June 2022 Spaces published a ten-point Safety Pledge committing to transparent moderation, data protection, anti-abuse measures, and resisting improper government access. It has been featured as Apple’s “App of The Day” and is available on the Apple App Store. The platform also pursued community ownership: in August it launched a Wefunder crowdfunding campaign allowing users to invest for as little as $100. Hornet Networks, which has served over 35 million users since 2011, positions Spaces within a larger queer-tech ecosystem.
