Overview
Questo builds mobile-guided city exploration games in which players solve riddles tied to their surroundings and ‘unlock’ places that mix fact and fiction. Games are created by local creators or in partnership with business partners on a revenue-share basis, and the company adds a new game each week. During the pandemic Questo expanded its presence from 40 cities at the start of 2020 to over 100 cities on four continents by 2021, and says its game supply grew by 150 percent. The product targets both tourists and locals and is positioned as a “Steam for real-world games” according to CEO Alex Govoreanu. Founded in 2017 and headquartered in Bucharest, the company has previously raised modest angel and seed rounds and won the UNWTO “Disruptive Hospitality” award in 2019. With new funding, Questo plans to accelerate expansion, targeting 200 cities by the end of 2021 with a particular focus on the US market. Questo is a Bucharest, Romania-based platform that offers gamified city exploration tours called quests. Led by CEO Alex Govoreanu, the company sells games through its iOS and Android apps, its website and partners including TripAdvisor, GetYourGuide and Musement. Prices per game range from €10 to €20 for a group of up to four players. The platform was available in 70 cities worldwide and the company aimed to expand to 100 cities by the end of 2020. Questo recently raised €300K to fund its expansion into more cities by working with local storytellers and tour operators. Questo is a mobile city exploration game that lets users explore cities by solving clues and following themed routes (quests) to discover places and stories. Led by CEO Alex Govoreanu and based in Bucharest, the app is present in 40 European cities and offers over 100 quests created by local content creators. Quests can be purchased inside the iOS and Android apps and via TripAdvisor and GetYourGuide for prices ranging from 8 to 20 Euro; the company also creates custom quests for brands, tourism agencies and employers. Last year, 35,000 people completed quests, collectively walking more than 100,000 kilometers, indicating user engagement and traction. Questo secured a pre-seed round from two private angel investors that valued the business at more than $1.5M and will use the funds to accelerate expansion into major global cities including London, New York, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam and Barcelona.
